Le savoir boire, the art of wine is a lesson best learnt early.

French MPs from constituencies in Burgundy and Champagne , concerned with the recent surge of young binge-drinkers, recommend school lessons in the health benefits of drinking French wine. After all, 'To be French is to know wine', say members of President Chirac's UMP, Philippe Martin and Gérard Voisin, in the Parliamentary Economics Committee report.

"Traditionally the French have always drunk a little too much regularly, while the British have drunk irregularly but way too much," says Dr. Michel Craplet of the French National Association for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Addiction. Yet the tables look to be turning as more and more French teenagers reject their parent's customs and penchant for fine wine, turning instead to quick-fix alcopops and strong spirits.

With 45,000 people dying prematurely from alcohol each year, "le binge-drinking", has now adopted the face of French youths and particularly its female component.
